PROBLEMS OF THE ALUMINIUM DUST EXTRACTION PROCESS
Aluminium dust produced during the grinding or polishing of aluminium profiles forms a highly explosive mixture with air. Aluminium dust is not only hazardous in the air, but also in the area of the production machine or grinding machine, where it can be highly dangerous.
The extraction of aluminium dust has fixed rules in extraction systems. The rules are laid down in the European ATEX directives. These directives are legislation on the design, sale and operation of equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. When extracting explosive aluminium dust, the minimum prescribed speed in the extraction duct must be observed in order to avoid the formation of deposits in the suction duct. The filtration system must be equipped with explosion relief safety features. The suction pipe must be fitted with protection against the propagation of the pressure wave to the suction sources. The whole assembly shall be pressure-resistant so that any explosion in the filter unit will not damage the individual parts.
We design and manufacture the size of filter units according to the need of extraction capacity for the given machines. We always try to understand the interplay of individual machines if more than one is connected to the extraction system. Due to the minimum speed specified by the ATEX directive, the extraction capacity cannot be regulated according to the number of machines actively in use using a central extraction duct. This would reduce the speed in the suction line and make the system inadequate. However, there is a solution.
Our filter units for aluminium dust extraction are equipped with flat filter hoses made of anti-static material. The pressure resistance of the filter unit housing is verified at 40 kPa. We equip the filter units for aluminium dust extraction with burst relief diaphragms with a release pressure of 10 kPa. When installing filter units filtering explosive dust inside the work hall, the bursting membranes are supplemented with flame extinguishing baskets. The filter units are equipped with automatic regeneration of the filter medium by means of pressurized air, controlled according to the pressure drop of the filter. Discharge and collection of waste are designed according to the client's requirements and the expected amount of dust to be separated.
